Medical guidelines

Depending on which medications you are taking, you may not be able to drink Ayahuasca.

While numerous medications may not be contraindicated with Ayahuasca and may not cause any biological interactions, they could still potentially lead to energetic interactions and/or have a negative impact on the overall experience. It is essential to consult with your Medical Doctor, and with us, to discuss any potential interactions between medications and Ayahuasca, ensuring the safest and most beneficial healing journey possible.

Ayahuasca contains MAOIs which can have serious interactions with certain medicines.

Participation is not recommended for people with: severe, imbalanced, or disabling health problems: cardiovascular (uncontrolled hypertension, history of myocardial infarction or heart failure), glaucoma, broken bones or recent surgeries, pregnancy, lactation, acute infectious diseases, epilepsy or seizures, stroke, certain psychiatric conditions (such as psychotic episodes, borderline personality, bipolar syndrome), severe liver, kidney, or pancreatic disease, or respiratory failure.

Contraindicated medications: Hepatotoxic drugs or emetics. The use of drugs or substances that alter consciousness, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), such as many antidepressants and other drugs. Combination with other substances with an effect on the serotonergic system such as MDMA and others is risky. Combination with yopo, vilca (Anadenanthera colubrina) or Sonoran Desert Toad (Incilius alvarius) is also risky. Combining with other medications such as antipsychotics or mood stabilizers should be evaluated by a professional.

If you are currently taking any medication or substance that is contraindicated with ayahuasca, you should consult your doctor to see if it is safe to stop taking it up to several weeks before, during, and after ayahuasca. You should not stop taking medication that has been prescribed by your doctor on your own. If you are taking anti-depressants, you may need to stop taking them at least 2-6 weeks before the retreat.

Asthma inhalers are not compatible with ayahuasca.

Do not take illegal drugs before, during or after the retreat.
